EDUARDO SZAZI, PhD

Professional

PhD in International Law, where he studied the legal status of non-governmental organizations in international law and their role in the development of democratic governance in multilateral organizations. He has extensive experience in the non-profit sector, regularly advising companies, foundations, institutes, civil society organizations and governments on subjects and projects for the relationship between the State, companies and civil society. For many years, he has been directly and intensely involved in the development of the legal framework for the non-profit sector in Brazil and in the systematization and dissemination of best governance practices for the sector.

Academic and institutional participation
He is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law in Washington USA and Emeritus Partner of GIFE. He is also a member of the American Society of International Law and the International Society of Third Sector Research, member of the Nucleus for Research in Third Sector Law and Public Policies of PPGD-UFPR and of the arbitrator list of CAMESC – Chamber of Arbitration and Mediation of Santa Catarina.
Regular speaker at national and international events and postgraduate courses on topics related to the legal framework of non-profit organizations, governance and democratic rights, with classes at FGV, FIA, ESPM, Mackenzie and other respectable educational institutions in Brazil. He has published several books and articles on international law and non-profit law, including: NGOs: Legitimate Subjects of International Law (ISBN 9789087281496), Terceiro Setor: Regulação no Brasil [Third Sector: Regulation in Brazil] (ISBN 9788575960741), Third Sector: Melhores práticas regulatórias internacionais [Best International Regulatory Practices] (ISBN 9788588401709) and Guia das Melhores Práticas de Governança para Fundações e Institutos Empresariais [Guide to Best Governance Practices for Foundations and Business Institutes] (ISBN 978-85-99645-31-4).

He defended his doctoral thesis in 2012 at Leiden University with the title of “NGOs: Legitimate Subjects of International Law”, under the advisory of Professor Grahame Lock. The text was published as a book cited above.
