The 20th century saw the growing importance of international law, especially after the end of World War II, the creation of the United Nations system and the enormous expansion of treaties, ranging from civil and political rights, economic and social rights to protection of the environment, among others.
These treaties were followed by the creation of public and private institutions dedicated to the promotion, monitoring and enforcement of these new laws and the requirement to hold states and non-state actors accountable for their violation.
Struggling with their own social challenges, Brazilians rarely deal with international law guidelines. Most people still believe that this is an issue for diplomats and academics only. They think like this because they are not aware of how international law affects their daily lives. However, at a time when global agendas are becoming increasingly urgent, it is time to take international law into the daily debate with civil society organizations and in judicial litigation in Brazil.
The SBSA law firm is pleased to maintain a relevant presence in the study and in promoting the participation of CSOs and Brazilian leaders in the international arena. We are also pleased to have contributed to the Brazilian representation in the negotiations on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, approved in 2006.
