The Civil Code is the main legal reference for Civil Law. This branch of law covers the basic rules that serve as a parameter for our day-to-day relationships, and is an expression of the principles that govern various areas of life in society.
The Brazilian Civil Code of 11/01/2003 contains 2,046 articles, divided into a General Part, which deals with People, Property and Legal Facts, and a Special Part, which covers the Law of Obligations, Company Law, the Law of Things, Family Law and Succession Law.
Civil Law is particularly relevant to the Third Sector, which is made up of private, non-profit organizations that are legally and voluntarily constituted and run autonomously.
According to the Civil Code, the Third Sector is made up of associations, foundations, NGOs, Institutes, OSCIPs and Social Organizations. In addition to this general rule, the life of these institutions is also very much determined by the Regulatory Framework for Civil Society Organizations (MROSC).
